Boxed

I joined the Boxed team as their Lead UI Designer in 2014. The next year I became the Lead Product Designer focusing on both UX and UI. A few months after that I began to build out a team of more Product Designers and my role became Product Design Manager. We work with co-founders, other design disciplines and project managers to launch projects across the customer facing platform, internal tools, business-specific products, third-party collaborations and more.

For over 4 years, I’ve run a small but ambitious team of talented Product Designers. We practice Start to Finish design, meaning we’re responsible for every stage of the project. We do all of our own research - academic, competitive analysis and interviews. We work with PMs to determine project scope, timing and feature sets for sprints. We explore the beginning stages of projects with paper and digital sketches, do wireframing, storyboarding, user flows, state and edge cases, and annotation. We prototype as much as possible and bring in users to test as often as we can. We’re in constant communications with the development teams, complete visual design in adherence with the styleguide and troubleshoot with the developers. We complete Visual QA and work with the QA team to ensure seamless launches. We present designs to the larger team, keep up with analytics after launch and help plan for A/B tests with the PMs and Data Science teams.

There’s no part of the Boxed experience that I haven’t designed at least once, please take a look at some case studies by clicking below. You can find Boxed live on the web or in the App and Google Play stores.

Styling

The Boxed styleguide has been a labor of love crafted by the head of design in collaboration with my team. We have worked with agencies and freelance creative directors who have worked to create a visual brand for Boxed, and then take those pieces and create the element and components that make up our Design Systems. We strive to ensure that the brand is reflected throughout the experience and try to create a cohesive and thoughtful system that our users can appreciate but maybe not notice. Take a look at some of it’s pieces below.

Speaking of Boxed

A few years ago, I had the privilege to speak at a Design Driven Talk hosted by FirstMark. Hopefully it ages well.

Jillian Bromley, lead product designer at Boxed, spoke at Design Driven NYC on April 12, 2016. Bromley discussed the challenges of being a solo designer at a startup. Boxed is a mobile commerce company focused on delivering the big box club experience to mobile devices.

Other cool stuff

Business Insider wrote this cool article comparing the Boxed and Costco websites. They had some really nice stuff to say. Read it here.

I’ve designed, printed and installed large-scaled vinyls for the office (family business). I assist on photo and video shoots, sketch and letter for promotional materials from time to time, including a guest-artist spot on a box, I’ve assisted with subway campaigns in the past, picked up an award or two on Boxed’s behalf, and even spent a few weeks moonlighting as a packaging designer.
