Case Study : First Time Experience

A frequently tested feature at Boxed is the idea of a ‘gated’ experience. This complex feature is highly fraught by opinions on the side of the company and the user, and we’ve tested countless iterations. Below are two of those: the Brochure-Gate, a highly visual, scrollable page on which the user can read up on the company or a simple modal stating the value props. Both forms currently require an email address or a login to enter the site.

First, we begin with the competitive analysis, looking at similar experiences across the web and taking screenshots to illustrate best practices and establish ux-patterns.

Sketches are wireframes are then completed, all variations on a theme are translated onto paper and or digital sketches.

Final wireframes are mocked and visual design is completed. Here is a 2017 version of the Brochure-Gate.

Here you can see the evolution from 2017 to the most recent version of the gate, which is currently in testing.

Final, responsive designs.

The other often-tested first time experience is a modal with an email input. We’ve tested many versions of this including, no email required, email only required, account creation required, among others. Below you’ll find sketches that kicked off the project.

These particular wireframes explored the various ways in which the inputs could be arranged.

Below you’ll find the ‘lifestyle’ version of the gate which is one currently being tested. Exact measurements are taken to ensure that all visual design standards are met before being passed off to the development team. Here you can see responsive sizing as well as annotations around the interaction.

A text-only version of the gate was tested as well.

One of our most recent tests measured the results of 5 different designs/experiences vs a control of no-gate.
